The land of hospitality

Flight itinerary beginning on Sunday night: Las Vegas to Newark, Newark to Vegas, Vegas to LA, LA to Memphis, Memphis to Amsterdam, Amsterdam to Accra, Ghana, by Wed. evening.

After I filtered through customs and retrieved my luggage, I exited the airport to be swallowed up by a sea of family members, taxi drivers, security guards and my new best friend, Sedique. A native of Ghana and long-time friend of All Nations Education's Director for Africa (Jay Ofori), Sedique welcomed me with a hearty hug and quick hand that snatched all of my luggage.

While driving to his "humble home," he said he prefers humble living and high thinking as he lives out the teachings of Hinduism. After we arrived, he fed me a vegetarian dish, and I went straight to bed. When I got up to go to the toilet in the middle of the night, I found him and his friend sleeping on the floor in the other room! No blankets or pillows. And I was sprawled out on his queen-sized bed.

The next morning, I told him I had expected the two of them to join me in the spacious bed. But he laughed as if that would have dishonored his royal guest.

Now I'm staying at Novotel in the bustling part of Accra with my dear friend (and our videographer) Jedd Goble. He is the founder of Testament Films, an organization devoted to raising awareness of social issues around the world through documentaries. Jedd and I worked together at Westmont on the Horizon, Westmont's student publication.

Tomorrow morning, we are going to Pastor Richard's--a Ghanian pastor I met in Las Vegas--congregation for church. All for now...
